Europe’s Leading Public-Private Partnership for Cloud

The Helix Nebula Initiative is a partnership between industry, space and science to establish a dynamic ecosystem, benefiting from open cloud services for the seamless integration of science into a business environment. Today, the partnership counts over 40 public and private partners.

Helix nebula @ EGI towards Horizon 2020 Workshop, Amsterdam, 4-6 December 2013

Helix Nebula was presented at "EGI towards Horizon 2020" Workshop in Amsterdam on 04-06 December 2013.

The three days of “EGI towards Horizon2020” Workshop on 4-6 December in Amsterdam offered a unique opportunity to discuss current challenges and opportunities under new Horizon 2020 EU Research programme in e-Infrastructures strategy and distributed computing development in Europe.

Progresses and next steps in Helix Nebula were presented by Mick Symonds (Atos) in the session “EGI Federated Cloud, public-private partnerships and business models” including a panel session where Bob Jones (CERN) also participated on 5 December.
The session had active participation from panellist and audience, highlighting that there is a slow but increasing willingness in scientific communities towards procuring commercial cloud services on a pay for use basis to provide additional capacity beyond their in-house resources.
An hybrid environment, where EGI federated cloud is interoperable and integrated with resources by commercial cloud providers in Helix Nebula’s platform,  offers to research communities attractive added value services compared to current offerings by a single global commercial provider, with enhanced privacy and functionalities like single sign-on and federated authentication, indicated among key driving factor in choice of cloud services.
