HNSciCloud at Cloud Procurement Session at Digital Infrastructures for Research 2016

Europe's leading e-infrastructures invited all researchers, developers and service providers for three days of brainstorming and discussions at the Digital Infrastructures for Research event (28-30 September 2016).

HNSciCloud was represented at the session on Procuring cloud services for the public research sector on September 28th, chaired by David Foster.

Around 50 attendees participated in the session. It consisted of a productive discussion regarding how the research sector can procure cloud services. Existing approaches, such as those adopted by HNSciCloud through Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) and by GEANT with the establishment of their recently released catalogue, were analysed. The participants discussed how these different approaches can overcome the existing challenges that public research organisations are facing. The challenges were identified by the PICSE project and confirmed by the audience. Finally, the discussion moved to the topic of how and if commercial cloud providers can serve science.

The DI4R 2016 conference was co-organised by EGI, EUDAT, GÉANT, OpenAIRE and RDA Europe, and was hosted by ACC Cyfronet AGH, Kraków's academic computing centre.

The event was designed with research communities in mind and aims to foster broader adoption of digital infrastructure services and promote user-driven innovation.
